What do frame, brakes and suspension change?
Steel or alloy frame Steel is robust and often good value. Alloy can reduce frame weight, but the weight of the complete bike also depends on its wheels, fork and components.
Rim, cable disc or hydraulic disc brakes Disc brakes stop at a rotor away from the rim and tend to work more consistently in wet conditions. Hydraulic discs can give smooth control with less hand effort; cable discs use a cable and need adjustment as they wear.
Rigid or suspension fork A rigid fork is simple for smooth paths. Front suspension absorbs bumps on gravel and formed trails. An 80–100mm fork does not by itself make a bike suitable for steep technical descents.
Fit check in store
- Confirm the frame size and reach in person; feet, hands and brakes must feel controlled.
- Check the route: light gravel, formed trails and technical riding ask different things of a bike.
